The sector includes  shops, department stores, supermarkets, market stalls, door-to-door salespeople, and internet retailers, and is linked with manufacture and distribution.

Roles can be customer-facing, dealing with customer care and generating sales to office-based administration and marketing roles to influencing trends, buying, procurement and making strategic business decisions. 

The sector operates in city centres, out of town retail parks and in small independent shops and online retail businesses.  Often seen as a ‘stop-gap’ for workers, there are excellent career opportunities and comprehensive training available with the right employers.
