The construction industry accounts for 8% of United Kingdom Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and has a workforce of 2.6 million. There is a significant skills shortage and a wide variety of roles at all levels of skills, experience and pay.
The industry itself includes a wide range of activities related to building, infrastructure development and civil engineering. It includes residential, commercial, and infrastructure. In essence it is the process of creating and building infrastructure such as roads, bridges and railways or a facility such as a home, hospital or school.
Construction starts with planning, design, and financing and continues until the project is built and ready for use. Normally, the job is managed by a project manager, and supervised by a construction manager, design engineer, construction engineer or project architect. Craft trades people such as bricklayers and joiners are essential to the construction sector.
It includes new work, repair, additions and alterations, the erection of prefabricated buildings or structures on the site and also construction of a temporary nature.
