An internship is a fixed term period of work experience that enables an individual to learn the basic of a role and acquire general skills needed at work, or to undertake a specific project and experience what it is like to do this in the realistic day to day environment.

They can be a useful part of an employer’s recruitment and support for young people, or people in local community who are looking to build their skills and confidence or learn more about a role before choosing their career.

Internships are offered by employers in many industry sectors and are aimed at all ages, though Internships are most usually aimed at those new to work, including school leavers, undergraduates and graduates. There are however, Internships for more experienced individuals with some existing skills and knowledge.

Internships can be a good way for a small business or a start up to source new ideas and think differently or simply to bring in skills that it needs, for example on latest technology or methods. For the Intern and the employer this is also an opportunity to consider whether a longer term job or career offer might be possible.

Interns benefit from the work experience to put on their CV and the opportunity to develop skills knowledge in their role and to make some valuable contacts in their sector. They also develop their transferable skills and help improve their future employability prospects.

Internships typically take place during the summer time or during the usual school, college and university holidays. They can last for any period of time but are usually between a couple of weeks and 12 months. In common with a permanent role the internship might be based in the office, wholly remote working or a hybrid of both.

There are also supported internships for young people with learning difficulties or learning disabilities, who need extra support to get a job.

Vacancies for internships are often advertised by individual employers but most careers and recruitment sites offer Internships as an option.

Internships can be paid or unpaid. Paid roles are often, but not always, more common when the Internship requires specific experience or knowledge. An intern’s rights depend on their employment status. If an intern is classed as a worker, then they’re normally due the National Minimum Wage.
