About SEND and APs in Cambridgeshire & Peterborough

At the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Careers Hub, we’ve made it a strategic priority to strengthen and expand the support we offer to our SEND schools and Alternative Provision institutions.

Out of 82 state secondary schools, SEND schools, AP, colleges, and sixth forms across the region, 30 focus on SEND and AP. These institutions play a crucial role in educating some of the region’s most vulnerable and disadvantaged young people. By partnering with employers, stakeholders, colleges, providers, and charities, we aim to broaden opportunities and help prevent these young people from becoming Not in Education, Employment, or Training (NEET).

Alvina Morey: Senior Enterprise Co-Ordinator

"I was delighted when I was asked to lead on the SEND /Alternative Provision for Cambridgeshire & Peterborough some two years ago.

My background was initially in fashion with 20 years spent in industry, working with factories and buyers, travelling to the Middle & Far East.  Then the arrival of two small children led me into education and education-related roles with a large part of that time spent in alternative provision, responsible for the delivery of many programmes, culminating in me being made Head of Centre.

Fourteen years of working with young people who faced numerous daily challenges - from difficulties in learning and supporting with post 16 destinations to being homeless - really did sharpen my understanding of the hardship faced by many vulnerable young students.

I hope it is the skills and qualities of determination, compassion, humility and knowledge gained through my various roles that I bring to this additional role, which will open doors, connect schools, young people to many wider opportunities."

SEND Community of Practice

Two years ago, the Careers Hub set up a SEND Community of Practice (COP)- a group of people who come together to share a common concern, a set of problems, or an interest in a topic and who come together to fulfil both individual and group goals.

Since then, we have focused on connecting all SEND/AP careers leaders, Enterprise Advisers, stakeholders and providers to share best practice and resources.  We have undertaken several projects which it is hoped will support and widen opportunities for young people.

The group meets on a termly basis, usually virtually but we are also introducing some face to face meetings across the area.  We are also extending this invitation to all SENCOs in schools too.
